49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo kicks off Sharks-Knights playoff game

Close calls and late goals have kept this series exciting as the two teams vie to continue in the playoffs.

The San Jose Sharks returned home to San Jose and SAP Center to play host to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3 of their second round matchup in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Golden Knights remain small series favorites despite splitting the first two games, and they enjoyed some success at San Jose during the regular season, winning 5-3 in the first meeting there and then falling 2-1 in overtime with backup goalie Malcolm Subban in net. Coach Jon Cooper could have opted to make changes.

Tomas Tatar - who was acquired from the Red Wings at the trade deadline for first, second and third-round draft picks - will likely rejoin the Golden Knights after sitting out the last four games as a healthy scratch.

The Giants, who scored in only the first and the ninth, trailed 5-3 before rallying for their third straight win and seventh in nine games.

It's not just these two, you can tell the Sharks are irked. His best was in overtime as he robbed Logan Couture with a glove save on a point-blank shot at 3:10. "But everyone was relaxed between periods". Let us know in the comments section below.

Momentum can be very fleeting in the playoffs whether in a game or a series.

"It's easy", Couture said. "We're chasing the game the whole series here". The Golden Knights have gone 24-19 on the road for the year and they have averaged 2.93 gpg and have allowed 2.91 gpg in those games. We've seen that before, as the Sharks and Knights playoff game extended to double overtime on Sunday. When I spoke with Tomas Hertl after Game 2 you would've thought they dropped a seven-spot in a game, not a series.

"We have to be ready to start the game", James Neal said.

Brent Burns, a defenseman for the Sharks with a beard of his own, tweeted at the quarterback. That discipline has been missing this round as Vegas has gotten 18 power plays in three games.

The Knights then scored through Colin Miller, Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith to put the expansion side 3-1 up.

San Jose also went short-handed twice in overtime for having too many men on the ice and for delay of game.

"We're doing a lot of good stuff, but through the three games we're chasing the game every night". On their first goal, Chris Tierney fed Timo Meier with a pass across the slot that Meier one-timed for his second goal of the playoffs.

"He's a special player, and when big games come about, special players take over and he did that", teammate Tyler Johnson said.

Like I said, brilliant. This is just the fourth time since 1975 that teams split the first two games in all four series in the second round. The others: 1991 (PIT-WSH, MTL-BOS, STL-MNS and EDM-LAK), 1986 (MTL-HFD, TOR-STL, WSH-NYR and EDM-CGY) and 1984 (NYI-WSH, MTL-QUE, STL-MNS and CGY-EDM).
