Facebook to lure shoppers with augmented reality

Yet on Messenger, efforts to work with businesses and brands are just getting started, Facebook said in a blog post announcing the new features.

Sources claim one of the two models features a touchscreen and camera, enabling users to access Facebook Messenger and video chat with other users. Finally, all these cool effects will be able to leave the Facebook app proper; you'll be able to distribute AR apps that can be viewed with Instagram and Messenger, a system that's already in closed beta on each of the platforms. More than 8 billion messages are exchanged between people and businesses each month - four times the number of messages exchanged a year ago, when Facebook committed to making the platform the "the yellow pages of messaging". Today, there are 200,000 developers actively building experiences, forging connections between people and the brands they love and bringing real value to their everyday lives.

Facebook is also working to improve Facebook M, the digital assistant that lives within Facebook Messenger. It said that the AR feature would give people a better way to look at products before purchasing them, and that M translations would help drive commerce by removing language barriers.

At launch, the following brands will be launching AR effects for their Messenger experiences: ASUS, Kia, Nike, and Sephora.

Buyers and sellers in Marketplace at Messenger will be able to communicate across languages, according to Marcus. Heck, if you picked up a stick and tossed it somewhere in the general vicinity, the object it landed on would probably be a Facebook Messenger feature, which is why Facebook is streamlining and redesigning its product to focus on one thing - Messaging. Marketers can place ads directly in the service, and Facebook sells ads in its News Feed that connect to Messenger conversations. AR Studio has new visual programming abilities that will let anyone drag-and-drop custom animations with their own actions and logic without having to write any code.

Other new capabilities include new tracking capabilities (body tracking, hand tracking and high-fidelity face tracking), as well as background segmentation to separate people from their background.
