Fred moves closer to joining Man Utd in £44m transfer

The Manchester Evening News claim that Pep Guardiola was pursuing a deal for the 25-year-old in January but pulled out at the eleventh hour because he did not feel that there was any rush.

And while United are now the club leading the charge for the Brazil worldwide, Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov insists that he is expecting offers this summer to be no lower than the one which City submitted in January.

But United will now look to push through a deal while Fred is in the UK, with the Brazilian - and the rest of his teammates - holed up in Tottenham's training facility until June 8.

It also appears they are trying to get their transfer business wrapped up early in the window.

The transfer strategy under Mourinho has never looked the most coherent but, whether they meant to or not, United have identified a real player in Fred that can plug gaps in the side where they are glaring.

Manchester City are also rumoured to be in the race to sign the player.

Manchester United are closing on a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

Barcelona are keen on adding to their midfield ranks, with Andre Gomes set to leave the club this summer, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of Denis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic, who has been recently linked with a move to Manchester City. But also, a squad with three or four Brazilian athletes, depending on their profile, can not make a great team too.

With Michael Carrick retiring and Marouane Fellaini seemingly on his way out too, Mourinho required a new central midfielder, hence the interest in Fred. They offered us around €50m for Fred.

During Shakhtar's Champions League campaign, Fred ranked top in their squad for passes completed (443), tackles won (18) and dribbles completed (23).

Fred is a box to box midfielder, known for his incisive passing and through balls.

Manchester United refused to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic since the club has no intention of spending Euro 100 million on a potential reserve. The Serb has enjoyed a fabulous season since moving to Manchester United from Chelsea.
