Justify wins Kentucky Derby in convincing fashion

Justify wins Kentucky Derby in convincing fashion

Not a silly 19th-century curse.

It is raining at the Kentucky Derby.

Smith and Justify moved to command soon thereafter, and the duo had a 1 1/2 length lead after the mile was completed in 1:37.35.

The next step for Justify is the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Unfortunately, on this particular day, Good Magic ran into what Brown called a "super horse" in the undefeated Justify and ultimately had to settle for second money after outlasting Audible by a nose for the minor award in the 2018 Derby.

That's a 136-year drought broken in the 144th running of the Derby.

The so-called Curse of Apollo is broken.

Well, before the text message update, Lucarelli said, "To win with those fractions, I nearly you-know-what in my trousers". "He just put himself up there with the greats". Justify did not race until February 18 - and he has only run at Santa Anita in suburban Los Angeles.

"He was just ... he's all Hall of Fame", Baffert said " He came through. That's greatness right there. When he won his second race, we were in Pharoah territory.

Since 1937, 61 2-year-old horses have been entered in the derby, but they all failed to win until this year.

"I was preparing my wife (Jill) for a loss, we were ready to head out of the gate as soon as they crossed the wire", Baffert said. You love to win on a a card at events like the Breeders' Cup (and) Derby day.

However, all certainly was not lost for Coolmore trainer O'Brien this weekend, as the master horseman collected the English 2000 Guineas hours earlier with Saxon Warrior - O'Brien's ninth win in the race.

The horses and jockeys were forced to navigate sloppy conditions at Churchill Downs in the first leg of the Triple Crown. "This horse came around, the first time we worked him I thought we had something really special".

"Keeping riding horses like this and that'll keep you around a long time", he said. I keep using the term 'above average, ' because he has a mind to him as well.

Jose Ortiz was the jockey on Good Magic.

Louisville-based Churchill Downs Inc. said Derby week earnings also set records. "He was in command the whole time. You've got to let a fast horse be fast sometimes". He's a nice horse. With his fifth victory, the 65-year-old snapped a tie for second and trails only Ben Jones with six. "When he got away I knew we had a chance". "Jose executed it flawless". Justify, though, made light of the hard conditions and his relative inexperience as he took up the running towards the end of the back stretch.

"I thought he finished the best of everyone", said Pletcher of Audible. But that horse had another gear and found more. But Smith made certain that the colt had it easy enough.

When asked about the victor, who put up a speedy half-mile time of 45.77, Pletcher lamented that he didn't run into the trouble that a chaotic 20-horse Derby can produce.

And of course, you can't escape the wall-to-wall TVs showing all the horse action one could take in. "He's an awfully good horse".
