Low to be 'open and honest' with Neuer on World Cup chances

Low to be 'open and honest' with Neuer on World Cup chances

Loew opts for Petersen over Bayern Munich forward Sandro Wagner.

Manager Joachim Low has, however, included the Bayern Munich goalkeeper in his provisional squad, along with Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Bayer Leverkusen's Bernd Leno and PSG stopper Kevin Trapp.

"Manuel is getting back into full training this week at Bayern Munich, that assures us that he can tolerate the full load in the training camp", explained Loew. "He's our captain and we hope that he can go into the tournament 100 percent fit".

Uncapped Freiburg striker Petersen received an invitation from the national team after scoring 15 goals in the Bundesliga this season.

The title-holders will have to submit their final 23-man squad including three goalkeepers on June 4.

His club-mate Gotze, who scored the winning goal in the final as Germany triumphed four years ago, misses out, however, after struggling for fitness and form at Signal Iduna Park this term. "We saw that we're not as good as we're always told we are - and perhaps some of us think we are".

In the post since 2006, Loew, 58, who steered Germany to their 2014 World Cup triumph, has signed a two-year extension to take him through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. "Personally, I'm very sorry for him", Loew said of Goetze.

Ozil and Gundogan have been criticised by the German Football Federation (DFB) for posing in photos with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"I know that those players [who missed out] are just very disappointed because they worked hard for it. Sandro has shown his class when with the team".

Die Mannschaft will take on Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in an intriguing looking Group F in Russian Federation.
