President Trump denounces Blankenship on Twitter

Republicans have a good chance at taking back a key Senate seat from Democratic incumbent Joe Manchin this year, but they worry a convicted coal baron may stand in their way.

Much of the discussion among candidates during the Republican primary for Senate has been how much each would support the president's agenda.

But in yet another Trump-esque move, Blankenship turned into the attack by comparing himself to the President in a direct response to Trump Jr: "Just like your father", he wrote, "I am a victim of fake news and a corrupt Obama DOJ". It's unclear if that will work in a general election. Trump remains very popular in West Virginia, which he won by 60 percent in 2016. (It was a misdemeanor, leaving Blankenship eligible to run for public office.) His deep pockets might allow Blankenship to steal the nomination, but Manchin and the Democrats will make minced meat out of him in November.

"I hope West Virginia voters will listen to President Trump when they go to the polls tomorrow", Morrisey said in a statement. Blankenship has recently come under fire for comments he made about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and McConnell's wife Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

President Donald Trump weighed in on the West Virginia Senate race through a tweet Monday morning.

IN and OH represent less treacherous scenarios for Republicans, but the GOP primary in the Hoosier State has been an all-out brawl to be President Trump's most loyal foot-soldier in the Senate. Since 2000 the Republican presidential nominee has carried the state.

Tuesday night will also provide a preview of races that could become critical to control of the U.S. House.

The most immediate opportunity for Democrats to pick up ground in the House is in Ohio's 12th Congressional District, where the resignation of GOP Rep. Not on what Blankenship has said or what he believes. Manchin faces his own primary challenger Tuesday in progressive newcomer Paula Jean Swearengin.

Blankenship's team is relishing the attention, seeing it as validation that their candidate - who they believe is a Republican in Trump's image - is surging.

Morrisey, the attorney general, is also now accusing Blankenship of violating election laws, for failing to file a financial disclosure. Trump supported Moore, who was accused of sexual assault against children, in the race against Democrat Doug Jones.
