Red Sox and Yankees selected for first ever London Series

The London Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games.

"It's also the first time the Red Sox and Yankees have played one another outside of NY or Boston". Two games in London, next June 29th and 30th.

"There is no better way to start the London Series and the first Major League Baseball fixture in Europe than a clash between two heavyweights of global sport - the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox".

However, the venue has faced legacy concerns with London Mayor Sadiq Khan taking personal charge of the stadium's future following Newham Council's exit from ownership company E20 late past year.

Regardless of the success of the MLB's foray to London, two more matches have already been slated for 2020 - potentially involving different teams - as Manfred continues his push to expand baseball's footprint beyond the confines of the US.

Mr Manfred said: "The stadium infrastructure in this city gives Major League Baseball every opportunity to put on a first-class event. We think that London is the ideal place and we're excited about bringing over one of the great rivalries".

Major League Baseball also announced Tuesday it will open its 2019 regular season with two games between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners at the Tokyo Dome.

Khan said: "London is the sporting capital of the world". There were significant challenges that had to be overcome.

"I've never been to London, so I'm looking forward to that", Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. We could not be happier that Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. has been able to make this a reality. "We expect an exciting and intense pair of games and appreciate the significance of representing our sport in such a meaningful way".

London Stadium holds 55,000 people and is the home for West Ham United Football Club.

"A great reason to come to London and to see these two great teams play in this venue".

"One of the important factors was that John and Hal had been talking about this possibility for a very long time".
