Student shot in arm at California school, teen suspect held

The school remained on lockdown Friday morning as school officials worked to reunite students with their parents.

The sheriff's department says deputies searched the school and found no evidence of a crime.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery, Harris said.

A teen boy is in custody after he reportedly shot one of his fellow students at a Palmdale, California high school.

Authorities were called to the school at 7:05 am, and officials said that the male suspect was apprehended at a nearby Vons grocery store after the shooting. A rifle was also recovered.

McDonnell said it is unclear whom the suspect was aiming at, stating that he "fired the rounds and deliberately left the campus".

The motive for the shooting is unknown and it's unclear whether it is gang related, Schrader said.

"All authorities are telling us right now is that they are working on the situation", Luke said.

Highland High student Katharina Smith, 16, said she was driving to the school when she saw "a ton of police racing toward school". The student said the suspect looked at him and told him to run, which he did, shouting at other students to do the same.

Lydia said she then heard two gunshots before she and her mom drove away.

"I thought he was joking, and I'm like, 'Don't mess around, that's not amusing, '" Salazar said.

A message posted to Highland High School principal's Twitter account urged everyone to stay clear of campus.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives [ATF] tweeted that they were responding to the incident. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The sheriff's office also tweeted that they investigated reports of shots fired near Manzanita Elementary School located about seven miles from Highland High School but the campus and school was clear.
