Why The Walking Dead Can't Survive Without Rick Grimes

The Walking Dead community received quite a shock yesterday when it was revealed that Andrew Lincoln, who portrays lead character Rick Grimes, would be departing the series in the upcoming ninth season. It's going to be a very different show with characters handling very different issues, challenges and threats than we've seen before.

The Walking Dead has always enjoyed an open relationship with its comic-book source material, mirroring plots faithfully right up until the point that it decides it doesn't want to.

AMC has yet to confirm Lincoln's departure, but some fans are wondering if this is the beginning of the end for the former ratings behemoth.

The news of the actor's exit was first reported by Collider.

Reedus is also expecting a baby with his girlfriend Diane Kruger. Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie, is only contracted to appear in six episodes in Season 9, which is now in production. Since then, it has been confirmed that Cohen will remain with the show for at least six episodes, all to air in the first half of the next season.

Over time, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan), the pregnant widow of Glenn Rhee, has increased her standing as a survivor leader. After ABC picked up Whiskey to series for a midseason bow, it closed the door on Cohan's full-time return to the series - even if she had closed a new deal. According to CB several other main cast members are near the end of their contracts as well which leaves the fate of AMC's signature hit in jeopardy after season 9.

Big news for fans of The Walking Dead. Co-star Norman Reedus is now negotiating a new deal that will reportedly pay him around $20 million per season to become the new face of the series.
