The CDC report on suicide rates appears in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report released Friday.

While suicide rates rose across age groups, the CDC said people ages 45-64 had the biggest rate increase. The C-D-C says almost half those who killed themselves had no known history of mental health issues.

"The data are disturbing", said Anne Schuchat, the CDC's principal deputy director. Experts say that this study reveals that not all who are suffering from long term mental health problems are at suicide risk.

Some factors that contribute to suicide are relationship problems, physical health problems, loss of housing, and a crisis from the past. The highest suicide rate increase was in North Dakota, at 57.6 percent, while the lowest was in DE, at 5.9 percent.

Leblanc says the state, and country, need to beef up their suicide detection efforts, increase the amount of mental health education, and expand mental health services, but that's tough to do under a budget crunch.

The New York State Office of Mental Health will also launch a new social media campaign to help connect residents to suicide prevention services.

Reduce access to lethal means - such as medications and firearms - among people at risk of suicide. But the researchers say about half of those who killed themselves were not known to have a mental health condition.

Overall, the most common method used was firearms.

Abby Litovski is over the center's crisis and suicide line program and says since news of the suicides came out, they have certainly gotten an increase in calls this week.

"It's just one of those things you can't hardly believe", said Culbreath.

Mental Illness is one major cause.

"Veterans made up about 18% of adult suicides but represent about 8.5% of the U.S. adult population", Schuchat said, noting that not all veterans who died by suicide were recent veterans. "There are many different circumstances and factors that contribute to suicide". While Stone acknowledged that a person's intentions are not always clear when drugs are present, these were deemed to be suicides by self-inflicted poisoning. Rates ranged from 6.9 per 100,000 in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana. Since 1999, the suicide rates in Nevada have actually dropped by 1 percent.

"The CDC's analysis of suicide trends suggests no state is making acceptable progress toward reaching this objective, and for many states the burden of suicide is growing", Bridge said in a statement Thursday. She and her colleagues recently analyzed suicides from 1999 to 2016.
