Today, three hours before the polls closed, President Trump came out against Sanford, calling him "nothing but trouble".

The second-term House member's district leans Republican, though Democrat Hillary Clinton received more votes there than Trump did in 2016.

Democrats, with just 16 of the nation's governorships, view the seat as one of their top pickup opportunities. Pete Domenici and Michelle Laxalt, the daughter of former Nevada governor and senator Paul Laxalt.

Voters in ME will be the first in the nation to use the system in a statewide election that lets voters rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one.

The system insured that counting was slow and winners hard to call.

In Maine, Shawn Moody's pitch to voters in his bid for the nomination for the governorship was reminiscent of Trump, running as an outsider businessman. He maintained a wide lead through the night, but risked not winning the race outright under the new rules. So the most important factor in these Republican primaries is becoming how personally loyal, how devoted are you to Donald Trump?

Still, South Carolina voters kept electing Sanford despite the lies and the infidelity.

"That means Party members will support him in anything he does, no matter how insane, because opposition could be politically fatal", West said.
