Capital-Gazette employees to march in July 4th parade

President Donald Trump has ordered USA flags on federal property be flown at half-staff through sunset Tuesday to honor five newspaper journalists slain in Maryland's capital.

The decision follows a request by the Australian mayor of Annapolis, Democrat Gavin Buckley, which he said was initially denied.

Susan O'Brien, the mayoral spokeswoman in Annapolis, had confirmed in a statement that the mayor requested the flags be lowered, adding: "The Mayor is extremely disappointed by the denial from the White House of his request to fly the United States flag at half staff in honor of the slain journalists from The Capital Gazette".

In the White House proclamation, Trump said that the nation "shares the sorrow of those affected by the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland". Sanders called Buckley on Monday night to confirm the request and said she'd get back to him Tuesday morning.

Trump issued a proclamation Tuesday ordering the flags to half-staff through sundown. "Is there a cutoff for tragedy?" he asked. It was an attack on freedom of speech. Buckley told the Gazette. Ramos had had a longstanding dispute with the newspaper and its employees dating back years, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The accused gunman in the attack has been charged with five counts of murder for the shooting deaths of editorial page editor Gerald Fischman; Rob Hiaasen, an assistant editor, Sunday columnist and brother of author and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen; sports reporter John McNamara; sales assistant Rebecca Smith; and editor and community reporter Wendi Winters.

However, since well before taking office, Trump has been openly antagonistic toward the press, calling it the "enemy of the American people," tweeting an image of him throttling a stand-in for a major media network - and, just three weeks ago, saying, "Our Country's biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!"
