Israel Attacks Empty Syrian Military Posts After Drone Infiltrates Israeli Airspace

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned his country will not allow Iran, its main enemy, to entrench itself militarily next door.

Before hitting a drone over the Golan Heights, Israel made sure that it belonged to Russian Federation and not Syria, Jonathan Conricus, Spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces, told foreign reporters in a telephone briefing.

On Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman vowed to act against any pro-Iranian terror buildup along the Golan Heights. An Israeli security source said police were scouring the Sea of Galilee, at the Golan foothills in northern Israel, for possible debris.

Israel has reportedly carried out several deadly airstrikes against Iranian and Iran-backed targets in Syria.

"We are still looking into why it crossed - whether it was on a military mission and crossed on objective, or it strayed", said Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman.

Russian Federation is a key ally to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

On Friday, the IDF fired on a Syrian military post after a shell launched during fighting between the regime and rebels landed in the buffer zone between Syria and Israel.

Israel did not comment on this bombing, but it was believed that their air force was targeting the T-4 Airport's barracks because of an alleged Iranian military presence.

The Kremlin stated that the two leaders will meet to "cover current issues related to bilateral cooperation and also the worldwide agenda, including a Palestinian-Israeli settlement and the situation in Syria".

But he said Moscow should encourage any Iranian forces in the area to leave.

But on Tuesday, Israel also signaled openness to eventual ties with Syria under Assad, a tacit acknowledgment that he was re-consolidating power as he beats back the rebels. Netanyahu's government has made clear it would not now cede the Golan and has been lobbying for US recognition of Israel's claim of sovereignty there.

The spokesperson said in a statement that three positions were attacked "in response to the infiltration of the Syrian UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) that was intercepted".
