Saga Of The Statue Of Liberty Scaler

Saga Of The Statue Of Liberty Scaler

A woman climbed the base of the Statue of Liberty Wednesday, causing park officials to evacuate the island.

After more than two hours, police have apprehended a woman who climbed the Statue of Liberty. The banner was organized by the group Rise and Resist NYC, which said on Facebook it was at the Statue of Liberty to demand President Trump abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and "reunite families, halt deportations and end detention as a deterrent".

Tourists in NY no doubt wanted to see the Statue of Liberty up close on this Independence Day, but thanks to these protesters' illegal behavior, they'll have to wait until next year.

The woman had earlier taken part in the anti-ICE protest, according to reports quoting an organiser with Rise and Resist, which arranged the demonstration.

Liberty Island, where the statue is located, was evacuated and all visitors were taken off the island via ferry, a National Parks spokesperson said. He says federal code of regulations prohibits hanging banners from the monument.

The banner said "Abolish I.C.E.", referring to part of the Department of Homeland Security.

A WOMAN is facing multiple federal charges after she scaled the Statue of Liberty in NY to protest President Trump's immigration policy.

Therese Okoumou said Thursday after a court appearance on misdemeanor charges that her protest was spontaneous as was directed at President Donald Trump's immigration policy.

"She did not discuss it with anybody beforehand, and we were completely unaware", said Guadino.

A woman is reportedly trying to climb up the Statue of Liberty. She has been arrested while protesting at least once before, in 2017, and works as a personal trainer and physical therapist, the New York Daily News reported. But Trump said on Twitter last week that abolishing ICE will "never happen!" She climbed down about 25 feet to the statue's observation point, with another officer descending ahead of her. Afterwards the woman scaled to the sandal of the iconic statue.

The Statue of Liberty, a powerful symbol of United States freedom and long a beacon to immigrants, was shut down on Independence Day as a woman refused to leave its base in a lengthy standoff with police.

"We immediately rushed out and met up with the harbor unit who took us over (to Liberty Island)", said Det.
