Bridgestone Invitational: Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter tied second

At one point on Saturday, Ian Poulter held the solo lead, but could not keep pace with his even-par 70.

Woods, an eight time victor of the tournament at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, had opened with a promising 66 on Thursday, and was five off the lead before plummeting down the leaderboard with a 73 on Saturday. He turned in a dud, and a birdie on the 18th hole gave him another 73 to leave him 15 shots behind.

The world No.3 has 2014 WGC-Bridgestone victor Rory McIlroy (67) and Ian Poulter (70) snapping at his heels three shots back.

She birdied the third, sixth, eighth, and 11th holes, and dropped her first shot of the major on the par-3 12th, a bogey.

Jason Day and Kyle Stanley tried to make a move, only to stumble with bogeys.

With the US PGA Tour changing the event's name and moving it to Tennessee next year, the 14-times major winner's hopes of farewelling Akron, Ohio with a first worldwide win in five years are all but over. "I was putting it in position where I should have been giving myself birdie chances and I was having to hole five-and six-footers for par".

The only regret for Thomas was a mistake that didn't cost him as much as it could have.

"We've played together a lot in tournaments, but never in this kind of situation", Thomas said. "So tomorrow is going to be one of those days I'm going to have to go out there and post a low one and see what happens".

Thomas' ninth title on the PGA Tour will bank him a cool $US1.7 million cheque and will move him up one spot on the world rankings. "I think it's going to be great prep for next week as well, so I'll obviously be fully engaged to try to win this tournament but knowing that if I play well tomorrow, it puts me in the right frame of mind going into next week as well (for USPGA Championship)".

Former World No.1 Day pulled within two shots of Thomas when he rattled off three straight birdies starting at the 10th hole, but a series of errant tee shots and poor recoveries resulted in back-to-back bogeys from the 13th. He has been runner-up three times, most recently at the British Open two weeks ago.

"I only putted well the first day".

Thomas' grandparents witnessed him win a PGA Tour event in person for the first time on Sunday.

"With a three-shot lead I knew I needed to play well but I had a little bit of wiggle room".

"I played well enough to win a few times this year and I only got over the line once", McIlroy said. I'm going to miss this place.
