Looking At The Potential Replacements For John McCain

McCain had been away from the Senate floor since last December, remaining at his Arizona home for treatment of glioblastoma - the same form of brain cancer that took the life of another Senate giant, Democrat Ted Kennedy, in 2009. On Friday, his family announced he would no longer be receiving treatment for the disease.

McCain was with his wife Cindy and their family when he passed in the afternoon, the statement said. "I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years", she said.

US President Donald Trump might not be invited for John McCain's funeral, Reuters reported citing sources.

The president, who as a candidate in 2016 mocked McCain's capture in Vietnam, had jabbed at the ailing senator for voting against Republican efforts to roll back President Barack Obama's health care law.

McCain first voted in favor of debating the bill, giving his fellow Republicans hope that their long-sought goal of repealing Obamacare was in sight.

August 29, 1936: John Sidney McCain III is born in the Panama Canal Zone. McCain delivered the speech with a winning earnestness and subtle comic timing, proving once again that he understood the value of self-parody when it came to winning the hearts and minds of the American people.

McCain got a taste of politics in 1976, when he served as the Navy's liaison to the Senate.

But in recent months, the man who had been a mainstay on Capitol Hill for more than three decades was noticeably absent. He opposed the president's nominee for Central Intelligence Agency director because of her past role in overseeing torture, scolded Trump for alienating USA allies at an global summit, labeled the administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy "an affront to the decency of the American people" and denounced the Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki as a "tragic mistake" in which the president put on "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

The office of Barack and Michelle Obama released a statement on the death of Mr McCain, in which Mr Obama wrote that despite all their differences, they shared "a fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed". The episode led McCain to become a leader on campaign finance reform, which included the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act.

Former Presidents Obama and George W Bush are expected to give eulogies. Many of his associates would never forgive him for choosing as his running mate a virtual unknown, the untested Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

Who could succeed John McCain in the Senate?

McCain returned to Vietnam a number of times, and has even visited the Hanoi Hilton.

"I haven't always done the right thing".

His first brush with death came during the war in July 1967 when a missile fired accidentally on board the aircraft carrier, USS Forrestal, sparked a series of explosions and fires that killed 134 sailors. Both of his arms and his knee were broken, and McCain was knocked unconscious and taken as a prisoner of war. They offered McCain an early release.

Mr Trump also attacked the senator, saying he became a notable Vietnam War veteran because he was captured.

"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's", he said in accepting the Republican presidential nomination.

Four years later, McCain would run and win a seat in the Senate, replacing iconic Arizona Sen. He was held captive for more than five years.

With his father a US Navy submarine commander and his grandfather an admiral, McCain follows their footsteps into a military career.
