Christine Blasey Ford's Lawyers Accuse GOP Of Bullying Her With Deadline

Maura Fitzgerald, a friend since high school, said: "The allegation against Brett is inconsistent with everything that I have known about him as a person".

It was only because he was drunk that he did not rape her, her lawyer said.

Moderate GOP Senator Susan Collins of ME, whose vote is critical to Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation in a chamber controlled by Republicans 51-49, said Friday she was "appalled" by Mr Trump's tweet, the Portland Press Herald reported. On Friday, the Committee announced that the Monday hearing for Kavanaugh and his accuser to both appear before the United States lawmakers has been called off.

The president previously had avoided naming Christine Blasey Ford or casting doubt on her account.

Calling on Dr Ford to "bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!", he asked: "Why didn't someone call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?"

The remark drew fury online, including accusations that Trump was "victim shaming" Ford.

"I was appalled by the president's tweet", said Sen.

"We know allegations of sexual assault are one of the most unreported crimes that exist", Ms Collins said at an event in Portland, the newspaper said.

Since then, Congress and the country at large have been embroiled in a debate about how to move forward with Kavanaugh's nomination.

Senator Dean Heller, a Nevada Republican, sounded bullish about the prospects of confirming the nominee, who would be expected to bring a more conservative tilt to America's highest court.

He did not, however, say how long he would wait for Ford "to decide if she wants to proceed".

'Everyone needs to be accountable, ' Poindexter told a pool reporter.

Ford's lawyers told the committee she refuses to appear on Monday, calling the date set by Republicans "arbitrary", according to multiple USA news reports.

After going through psychotherapy, Ford said, she now understands the incident as a trauma that has had lasting impact on her life.

Trump supporters cheer during a rally at JQH Arena in Springfield, Missouri on Friday.

Before Friday's tweet, Trump had won praise for keeping his comments about Ford respectful, even while continuing to back his nominee to the hilt.

"The rush to a hearing is unnecessary, and contrary to the Committee discovering the truth", she adds. You owe it to the accused'.

The timetable brought cries of protest from Democrats, who have called on the FBI to investigate the allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford, a professor from California, and to expand the number of witnesses who would be called beyond Ford and Kavanaugh.

"With all the extensions we give Dr Ford to decide if she still wants to testify to the Senate I feel like I'm playing 2nd trombone in the judiciary orchestra and Schumer is the conductor", he added.

The committee has now set a 10pm Friday deadline for Ford to accept the invitation to testify on Wednesday.

In her Friday night email, Katz insists that "the 10 p.m deadline is arbitrary".

Katz continued: "Dr. Ford has asked me to let you know that she appreciates the various options you have suggested".

They have not announced if they'll honor her request to be interviewed by senators and not a special counsel.

The Senate Judiciary Committee would have to change the Monday hearing.

Blasey's lawyer, Debra Katz, responded with a blistering email, accusing Grassley's aides of pressuring her client "to agree to conditions you find advantageous to the nominee", and of imposing "aggressive and artificial deadlines" whose "sole objective is to bully Dr Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family".
