A group of researchers, led by Associate Professor Russell Roberts (Charles Sturt University, Editor in Chief, AJRH) identify the increased risk of early death of people living with mental health issues in rural settings and look at the need for policy and practice responses.

"Driven by violence, environmental changes and inequality, mental disorders are going unchecked in every country in the world".

Based on the World Health Organisation, 14 percent of the global burden of diseases is attributed to mental, neurological, and substance use disorders. More importantly, no statistic can ever begin to capture the devastating and isolating impact on those people affected by mental health issues, and on their families and friends.

The goal of the conference was to develop programmes to meet the needs of the Bahamian youth suffering from mental health issues and to remove the negative stigma towards mental illness.

Dr Fernander said: "Our young people face constant challenges and stressors - happening in their own lives and the world around them".

"I had been going through an extremely tough year with my own physical health and my loved ones were also going through extremely hard situations, I found my own mental health deteriorating rapidly".


When we ask children and young people (and their families) to tolerate levels of distress that many grown-ups would struggle to tolerate, we're sending a powerful message.

She says, although today most people understand that mental illness is a medical condition, still the stigma stops people from seeking medical help.
