GM reveals upcoming Cadillac EV built on next-gen EV platform

GM is developing an EV platform and says Cadillac will be the first brand to come onboard.

The President of Cadillac, Steve Carlisle, said that this electric crossover will be "the foundation for a new kind of Cadillac".

"They have done a lot to popularize electric vehicles and get in the minds of consumers", he said. According to the company-issued report, this Cadillac EV will be based on GM's next-gen EV architecture. This will be the first model derived from GM's future EV platform.

While the company revealed its all-new XT6 crossover at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, it also hinted at a future for the Escalade and another upcoming performance sedan.

The vehicle showcased on Sunday doesn't yet have a name, but Cadillac did provide limited details on the engineering concept. Its arrival is part of an aggressive product cadence at Cadillac that will see one new model launched roughly every six months through 2021.

Days after General Motors announced that Cadillac would lead its foray into manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs), the luxury division gave us a first look of its upcoming electric SUV. The BEV3 platform will underpin multiple future Cadillac body styles.

Although Cadillac sells the bulk of its product in North America, the company's president Steve Carlisle has global expectations for its electric vehicle division.

The new design will compete directly with Tesla's Model X, the main all-electric crossover now in the market.
