Drug Bust: Police Warn Mexican Cartels Targeting Australia

Australian authorities said it was also the largest haul of the drug intercepted while bound for Australia and would have provided around 17 million hits of the substance also known as ice.

In 2015, Australia's government established a national taskforce to tackle the growing use of crystal methamphetamine (dubbed "ice"), which has become the most common illicit drug in the country.

The meth was found in two containers concealed inside dozens of metal boxes that had been declared to Customs as "Single Loud Speakers", according to investigators.

Around 1.7 tons of meth was seized in California on January 9 by United States authorities, along with smaller amounts of cocaine and heroin, police said. This is the largest ever shipment of methylamphetamine bound for Australia and the largest ever domestic seizure of meth on record in the US.

A joint operation between American and Australian law enforcement led to the seizure of close to two tons of methamphetamine in California that was bound for the land down under, authorities announced late Thursday.

Australian authorities said that the operation with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Drug Enforcement Agency, Australian Federal Police and Victoria state police had stopped "a tsunami of ice" from reaching their shores.

Four Australians and two USA citizens were arrested on Wednesday by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on suspicion of involvement in the trafficking, authorities said.

Three of those arrested in Australia will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Friday.

"We continue to pay top dollar for drugs in this country and this is a draw card for selling drugs", AFP Assistant Commissioner Organised Crime Bruce Hill told media on Friday. Two other Australians face the same charge. This is now flagging the intent Australia is now being targeted.

"This cartel is among one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking syndicates in the world".

Police believe the Mexican cartel has links to Australian-based outlaw bikie gangs but would not give further detail.

Commissioner Bruce Hill. "By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the vast pain these drugs would have caused our community". The suspect was linked to organised crime with outlaw motorcycle gangs.
