Huawei Mate X: A foldable triple screen 5G smartphone

Huawei Mate X: A foldable triple screen 5G smartphone

The Mate X and the Galaxy Fold take very different approaches to the technology.

When folded, the device is a huge display smartphone with a 6.6-inch screen, and when opened, it turns into a slim tablet with an 8-inch screen. Galaxy Fold goes for $1,980 while the Mate X starts at $2,600.

Huawei has entered the "folding phone fray" in an attempt to show that Samsung hasn't cornered the market on innovation, at least when it comes to the gadget de jour. Think again - the Huawei Mate X is our favorite gadget we've seen at MWC 2019, and it looks like it could be a gamechanger. After Samsung announced its Galaxy Fold and Huawei came out with the Mate X, there was much to be excited about. At €2,299 (about £2000 and $2600, then), it's even more expensive than the $1980 Samsung Galaxy Fold. So the large tablet-like display folds leaving a screen on the front and back of the phone. According to Shen, the folded screen "does not bring about a huge improvement in user experience".

Many have already questioned the durability of not just the hinge in both phones, but also the flexible screen. The Galaxy Note 9, introduced in August a year ago, features a 6.4-inch display, however, rumors suggest that the Note 10 could sport a 6.75-inch display - the largest ever in the Galaxy Note series, PhoneArena reports. However, the two devices utilize their folding screens differently.

When closed the Mate X has a 6.6in screen comparable with today's top-end phones. Yes, this year's smartphone gathering in Barcelona is truly about foldables.

Meanwhile, Huawei has equipped the new phone with its Ballon 5000 chipset to support 5G and said, "Huawei Mate X supports both NSA and SA network". For robust performance, you've got 8GB RAM and enough 512GB internal storage space.

If there is anything foldable smartphones so far have shown, it is that they are highly priced. To him, the 11mm thick folded device is 6mm thinner than "other foldable phones", while the 5.4mm thickness when open is thinner than an iPad Pro.

Moreover, the Huawei Mate X comes with an integrated Fingerprint Power Button that enables users to power up the device with one tap, offering a secure and convenient experience. (In some cases, the device maker will also choose to sell new products directly to consumers at the same time carriers do.) We know that the phone will launch with exclusive partner Verizon sometime in Q2 before becoming available on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in the following months.
