Huawei Mate X: Worlds's fastest, thinnest, and most expensive 5G foldable phone

Huawei Mate X: Worlds's fastest, thinnest, and most expensive 5G foldable phone

"For Huawei to get close to Samsung's volumes this year, the company has to succeed the launch of its new P30 smartphone flagship device at the end of March, and to make sure it will create a brand halo effect on its entire phone portfolio".

Huawei, the embattled Chinese tech superpower, has announced its first foldable smartphone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. That price makes it significantly more expensive than Samsung's approximately $2,700 CAD Galaxy Fold.

It's when you view the device from the top or bottom sides that it becomes evident that this isn't your usual slab phone design. And thanks to Huawei's alternative layout, the Mate X gains some notable advantages over Samsung's take.

Several other smaller companies are rumoured to present their first foldable phones at the trade fair in Barcelona this week.

Because you can always see at least one screen when folded, Huawei didn't need to add cameras to every side of the device.

Foldable phones are all the rage as Samsung leads the way with the Galaxy Fold

Instead they are placed on the flipside of the device on a strip that also features a fingerprint sensor.

Pocket-lint spoke to Xiaomi senior vice president, Wang Xhang, who explained to us that, while development of the foldable phone is advanced, it is very much a work in progress.

That's complimented by a secondary back screen measuring 6.38 inches (2480 x 892 resolution / 25:9 aspect ratio). This design also allows Huawei to use the same LEICA camera system for both the front and rear of the device. Huawei says the hinge system used in the phone is patented and has over 100 components. It's to be noted that this seems to be the weak-point of Huawei's design as it doesn't look almost as refined as Samsung's attempt. This new foldable smartphone comes packed with a single folding screen unlike the two screens on Galaxy Fold.

The Huawei Mate X sports a different design compared to its competitors. Because there's two batteries, they can be charged at the same time at high charging rates. TOI-Gadgets Now will be covering the event live, stay with us for live updates: - Huawei Mate X will be priced at 2,299 euros and will be available "middle of 2019" - The foldable phone also comes with a 55W super-fast charger - Huawei Mate X offers dual-SIM connectivity and has dual battery of 4500mAH. By nature of it being a flexible display means that we're dealing with a polymer material which is softer than glass, and thus also more scratch prone.

Huawei set the ball rolling with the Mate X, it's version of the foldable phone, while HMD Global announced the Nokia 9 Pureview with five cameras. In fact, as thin or less than an Apple iPad when closed, according to Huawei. We watched as the Mate X changed from a phone into a tablet while browsing YouTube. For starters, Huawei said the phone was "ultra slim" and "ultra-compact" "opening to just 5.4mm thick and folding to a slimline 11mm".
