Mavericks trade F Barnes to Kings

Exciting trade developments for the Kings as they looked to extend their three-game winning streak Wednesday.

The Houston Rockets are acquiring guard Iman Shumpert in a three-way deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings, league sources told ESPN. The Rockets made this deal to get Knight's contract off the books. The Kings move Shumpert for a younger wing, but get to remain competitive, while the Cavs are in full asset-gathering mode and will happily take on a lotto-protected first to eat some salary in the form of Knight and Chriss. It remains unclear how they figure into the Rockets' plans. They unloaded Knight ($14.6M) and Chriss ($3.2M), not to mention the $15.6M that Knight is owed next season. Over his seven-year National Basketball Association career, he has played in 394 games (320 starts) with Detroit, Milwaukee, Phoenix and Houston, holding averages of 14.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 30.6 minutes per game.

Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni drafted Shumpert with the 17th pick in 2011 when he was coach of the New York Knicks.

While Shumpert is expected to have more of an off-the-bench role with the Rockets, players like Chris Paul are excited to have him on the roster as he adds some much-needed depth for a playoff push.

"He has the athletic ability to guard a Derrick Rose or a Dwyane Wade or a LeBron James", said D'Antoni at the time.
