As a result, the co-main between Brazilian great Anderson Silva and New Zealand phenom Israel Adesanya will now become the headline event.

UFC 234 has taken a sudden hit on the day of the event, as UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has been forced out of his main event title defense against Kelvin Gastelum.

The cancellation of the bout poses the question of whether or not Gastelum will get the first shot at Whittaker's belt when he returns from injury, with the victor of the fight between Adesanya and Silva guaranteed a title shot.

This marks the second time that Whittaker has been slated to fight in Australia, but been unable to compete because of complications.

UFC president Dana White revealed the news to ESPN on Saturday after Whittaker pulled out of the fight.

Whittaker was taken to hospital on Saturday morning, a source told ESPN's Ariel Helwani. The Early Prelim headlining bout pitting Lando Vannata vs. Marcos Mariano has been elevated to the UFC 234 Pay-Per-View main card.

"The Ultimate Fighter 17" victor has been working for a chance at UFC gold for a long time.

Adesanya is undefeated from 15 fights in mixed martial arts, and won his first four fights in the UFC past year, including three victories that were adjudged performance of the night.
