AOC campaign finance allegations 'serious and troubling,' lawyer says

'There is no violation, ' the first-term lawmaker told Fox News as she arrived in Washington, D.C. for a day when votes in the House are scheduled. The Act requires that all expenditures of $200 or more to be disclosed to the FEC, and their objective identified. He did not mention that it would also free candidates from the responsibility of disclosure.

However, Ryan said the Federal Election Commission could balk at another aspect of the committees' reports: the broad category of "strategic consulting" that committees used to describe Brand New Congress LLC's work on their behalf.

Conservative watchdog group National Legal and Policy Center on Monday filed a complaint to the Federal Election Commission alleging Chakrabarti's LLC raised the issue of transparency with the way it masked its subvendors by lumping together the PAC's expenditures as generic "strategic consulting" payments to the firm. Even more tellingly, while Brand New Campaign LLC is registered in DE, there are no Secretary of State records for Brand New Congress LLC, and the time or location of its incorporation remain unknown.

The funds, the NLPC writes, were likely spent on campaign events for Ocasio-Cortez and other far-left Democratic candidates favored by Chakrabarti, who made his fortune in Silicon Valley and previously worked on Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign. A video last month of Ocasio-Cortez firing off questions about dark money and campaign finance laws to experts during a congressional hearing has been viewed about 40 million times, reportedly making it the most watched political video posted on Twitter. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), who Ocasio-Cortez defeated for re-election in 2018.

The group stated it ran campaigns in a similar fashion for at least nine other candidates.

David Mitrani, an attorney for the Ocasio-Cortez's campaign, the two PACs, and the company told ABC News in a statement that all of the entities have "fully complied with the law and the highest ethical standards". The company, then called Brand New Campaign LLC, was set up to provide all-in-one campaign services to candidates without political background.

The group has called the "Green New Deal" an unrealistic and potentially ruinous plan for the USA economy that would require massive government spending.

Adav Noti, the senior director of the Campaign Legal Center and a former FEC lawyer, said the arrangement was highly unusual and seemed meant to obscure the destination of the funds. From her constitutents" point of view, as a House member who has nailed her colours to the "clean campaign finance' mast, it is particularly important to determine whether she was in fact an accomplice to potential violations of campaign finance laws, given her close relationship with Charkrabarti.
