Facebook Messenger's dark mode is unlocked by a fun emoji Easter egg

Messenger's dark mode was made available to select users in certain countries late previous year as part of the feature's early testing phase.

After that, you'll see an animation of a bunch of moons falling down from the top of the app, together with the query to enable the dark mode option in the app's settings. "Dark mode cuts down the glare from your phone for use in low light situations, so you can use the Messenger features you love no matter when or where you are", the company said.

The hidden feature works on both Android and IOS devices, but it's still unclear if "Dark Mode" has rolled out to everyone or a select batch of users.

All you need to do is open up the app (obviously) and send a moon emoji on a chat. The standard Facebook Messenger experience, or the very dark Dark Mode that we have just unlocked?

When you use Messenger now, you'll find that the app has a black background, the icons that were once blue are white, and overall, it's easier on the eyes. Personally, I'm not a fan because I get headaches from reverse type in general, but if you're interested in trying out this new feature, I've put the instructions below.

There are several moon emoji. You'll also need to ensure you're running the latest version of Facebook Messenger.

Tap the crescent moon emoji a second time after you've texted it to someone. The app does notify that the dark mode is still in work and is inconsistent around the app.

Force quit the Messenger app and restart it, then try again.
