India Awaits China’s Stand On Masood Azhar Ahead Of UN Meeting

"It shouldn't have to come to that", a Security Council diplomat told newswire agency PTI in an unusually tough warning to China. But US and European officials say they are waiting to see if the crackdown is effective or if the militants' infrastructure will spring back to life once global pressure on Islamabad subsides.

Pakistan has been under pressure for the last couple of weeks after a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy of Indian troops, killing at least 40 soldiers in Indian-administered Kashmir's Pulwama area on February 14.

We are grateful for the efforts of the Member States who moved the designation proposal and the unprecedented number of all other Security Council members as well as non-members who joined as co-sponsors.

In the face of this unfortunate development, should India ban products from China? It shared an image of what it said was Nehru's letter dated August 2, 1955, supporting China's bid for a UNSC berth.

A senior government official, who refused to be named as he was not authorised to speak to media, said there has been a move to "restrict" Chinese imports but that India was not in a position to replace products such as electronics. "China is ready to communicate and coordinate with all sides including India to properly handle this issue", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.

Has Modi government's diplomatic overtures with China failed?

Jaish-e-Mohammad literally means the Army of Mohammad.

Chinese products - from mobile phones made by companies such as Xiaomi Inc to toys - are ubiquitous in India and trade between the countries grew to almost $90 billion in the year ending March 2018.

"I urge Beijing to allow the United Nations to place sanctions on Azhar, the leader of a UN-recognized terrorist organization", Sherman said. "Bow to Xi in China", Gandhi said in Twitter.

Taking the issue to the Security Council for an open discussion and vote is also an option which could publicly shame the Chinese for their support to the leader of a UN-designated terrorist group.
