Massive Search For Missing Little Girls In Humboldt County

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is searching for two young girls who went missing on Friday.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) said in a news release that 5-year-old Caroline Carrico and 8-year-old Leia Carrico were last seen at 2:30 p.m. on Friday outside of their home in Benbow, located about 70 miles south of Eureka in the northwest part of California. Ireland said Misty Carrico realized the kids were missing at about 3 p.m., at which point family and community members began searching for them.

The sheriff's office said Saturday they were following a trail of granola bar wrappers found in the woods after the girls' mother confirmed she'd recently bought the same brand.

The area where search teams were scouring is steep, heavily-wooded terrain.

There are now ten search teams on the hill above Benbow, a prominently rural area of Humboldt County, according to HCSO.

He added that sisters Caroline Carrico, 5, and Leia Carrico, 8, had received outdoor survival training through their 4-H club, the wire service reported.

Honsal said uncoordinated, individual search efforts might hinder rescue efforts by interfering with tracks or throwing off the scent for search dogs.

The sister's disappearance led to a major outpouring of support from the community, as ABC News reports that the search involved more than 170 personnel from 21 law enforcement agencies.

The search extended into Sunday with officers going door to door and inspecting all vehicles going in and out of the sprawling area where the search was centered, about 280 miles north of San Francisco.

"We have a lot of clues as to the direction they went". Lt. Mike Fridley said.

"It's a chess game", he said, of trying to figure out where the girls are at. "They wanted to go on a walk, mom wasn't ready to do so", Ireland said. "They could have made it to the highway, some stranger could have picked them up", he said.
