Mauricio Pochettino charged by FA following Mike Dean bust-up at Burnley

Mauricio Pochettino charged by FA following Mike Dean bust-up at Burnley

The Tottenham coach angrily squared up to referee Mike Dean after the final whistle of a 2-1 loss at Burnley yesterday, venting his frustration over a decision that led to the hosts' opening goal.

"I expect Mauricio Pochettino to be charged by the FA for his behaviour towards referee Mike Dean - and the recording of their exchange could be used in evidence", he told the Daily Mail.

The Argentine manager admitted he "crossed the line" and that he might apologise to Dean.

Dean angered Pochettino after incorrectly awarding a corner to Burnley, which led to Burnley taking the lead, in addition to Phil Bardsley avoiding a red card for a risky challenge on Danny Rose.

"He has until 6pm on (Thursday) February 28, 2019 to respond to the charge".

Dean had been scheduled to be on fourth official duty for Spurs' game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday before the Professional Game Match Officials Limited group (PGMOL) re-assigned him to the Manchester City vs West Ham game instead.

"Maybe I needed to go straight away to my dressing room and get some water and be a little bit relaxed. I am the first, I need to blame myself", Pochettino said.

Former Premier League ref Mark Clattenburg has had his say on the event, and revealed that he expects a charge to be forthcoming.

"I'm not going to talk too much. I needed to calm down, I wanted to find someone to blame, because we can not think now of being a real contender", said the Spurs manager. "The thing happened on the pitch and I hope that it's not going (any) further", he said on Saturday.

Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points, five points behind Manchester City and six adrift of leaders Liverpool.

And Pochettino accepts it may now not matter if Spurs win their next two league matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.

"But at the end, because of the emotions, everyone was nervous, sometimes we find answers, excuses, and try to justify the defeat". "We've been there for a few years, we've got to see whether we can take it up another level".
