Miami Dolphins trade Ryan Tannehill to Tennessee Titans

Miami Dolphins trade Ryan Tannehill to Tennessee Titans

Tennessee sent a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a seventh-round pick in 2019 to Miami for Tannehill and a sixth-round pick.

The only two quarterbacks left on the Miami roster after the Tannehill deal were Jake Rudock and Luke Falk. Tannehill was never able to take the next step in his development.

His contract was to balloon to £14.1m in base salary this year, and he would have counted £20m against the salary cap.

In Tennessee Tannehill will not likely be given a chance to start but given the injury history of Marcus Mariota, Tannehill will likely see plenty of opportunities to play with the Titans.

Needless to say, the Dolphins' quarterback room is not in great shape at the moment. The Dolphins are picking up $5 million of his $7 million salary, but will save $8 million on the cap this year and $25 million on the cap in 2020. General manager Jon Robinson said Friday that Gabbert will be released.

As a stopgap, Miami is also in the market for a veteran.

In his last National Football League season, Kaepernick threw for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns. Tannehill has missed 25 games over his last three seasons due to a variety of injuries including a right shoulder capsule injury that cost him five games in 2018. And his departure doesn't come as a big surprise when considering reports surfaced that the team was expected to go a different direction at the quarterback position under head coach Brian Flores.

Mariota, the former second-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, hasn't necessarily proven himself as a guy worthy of a monster contract.
